8 Quick Questions with Emma

Updated: Jun 7

An interview with Emma, the owner of Shore Retail

Why did you decide to start Shore Retail?

Well, I had an idea about starting a consultancy to help small businesses about 15 years ago and over time it evolved and changed as things do. During the COVID Pandemic I saw how much retailers such as Amazon had grown and saw the sad demise of many medium and small sized retailers, some of whom I'd worked for in the past. I realised that now was the time to use my experience to help the small unique high street shops survive and thrive in a tough landscape

Why is it called Shore Retail?

The shore represents a place of calm and stillness, and signifies space to think, strategize and plan.

So what does Shore actually do?

Medium and large scale businesses often have large commercial or business management teams, but small businesses can't afford this, or don't have the need for full time support. Shore Retail offers you business support when you need it, be it on a regular basis for a short amount of time or on a shorter term basis to support with a project.

What's been your biggest achievement to date?

I think packing up my house and belongings and moving to the Middle East by myself back in 2010. Thinking back on it now, I remember making the decision so quickly I didn't allow myself to be scared and consider it a time when I was very brave. It was a challenging few years but I really grew both professionally and personally during this time.

Who has inspired you in life?

The Queen, she devoted her entire life to the service of her subjects and did so in a quiet, calm and inspirational like manner

What would be your advice to young adults starting out their careers today?

Think BIG! But be prepared to work hard, make mistakes and learn from them. Additionally seek our experienced individuals and learn from them, networking has been a key part of my career to date.

What moment in your life did you really connect with yourself?

Back in 2016, I backpacked around South America for 6 months, it was probably the most planned out backpacking trip anyone has ever gone on. I literally planned it to the day, researched all the costs, read all the books. Everyone laughed at how organised I was. But I made it round the continent with my backpack in tact and luckily no bad experiences and had the time of my life. Be true to yourself!

Last question.... where do you see yourself in 5 years

This is always such a tough question, as I like to be open to the opportunities that the world throws my way. Saying that, I'd love to find myself in a position where I could see businesses that I had worked with growing and succeeding and our British high streets regaining that individualism and heritage that we are well known for.
